A Little Search Engine Optimisation Primer:

Without doubt the most cost-effective way of attracting visitors to a web site is to have a well structured web site listed in one of the major searchengines. Over 57% of Internet users search the web every day, and over 80% use a search engine every time they use their browser. Search Engine MSN - logo Now with over 500 Million people on-line worldwide the potential market place is massive, and so is the competition.

It used to be true that you could stuff a web site with your targeted keywords, and use other 'tricks' to fool the search engine, and you would get lots of traffic. Now, search engines are much smarter and will penalize any site that they find using these 'spamming' techniques. Though some of these methods do work them are false economies - as the search engines update their search software those websites that fall foul of the new rules will disappear from the search results.

traintrain has undertaken successful search engine optimisation campaigns for a number of our clients and many of these have appeared in the top 5 positions in the major search engines. traintrain is committed to SEO Code of Ethics which means that we will only use ethical methods, acceptable to the search engines, when undertaking search engine optimisation for our clients.

There are literally thousands of search engines in use however only a handful are used by the majority of searchers. The following table shows the breakdown of search engine use for November 2005. These values are from the Nielsen/NetRatings reporting service which measures the search behaviour of more than a million people worldwide. These web surfers have real-time meters on their computers which monitor the sites they visit. This metered information is compiled to produce NetRatings results.

Netscape 0.6% Other 5.2%

When we undertake a search engine optimisation campaign for a client we are targeting the top 3 popular search engines. There are two important reasons for this: the first one is blatantly obvious; the most popular will have the most users and therefore will offer the best chance of visitors to a client’s site. The second reason is not so obvious. Those top 3 search engines often supply search services to other search engines. Example of this is Netscape and AOL. Both these search engines receive their primary search results and their paid for search results from Google.
